Speaking the HR language - the vital role of interpreters
Effective communication is key in all sensitive HR meetings, such as
redundancies and disciplinaries. I recently had a client who had attempted to
use their own employees to interpret during a disciplinary meeting with
disastrous consequences: gossip spread, and arguments erupted among employees.
That’s when the client contacted me, and I assisted them in subsequent
meetings. It became evident that professional independent interpreters are not
an expendable luxury but a necessity in such situations. If language barriers are
an issue, I’d recommend the services of an independent interpreter – they are invaluable
in maintaining fairness, confidentiality, and peace within the workplace.
Ensuring Fairness and Objectivity
HR meetings, especially when addressing grievances and redundancies,
demand impartiality. Unfortunately, some employers still resort to using their
own employees “to translate” for them in these sensitive matters. Independent
interpreters guarantee that all parties are heard and understood without bias.
Maintaining Confidentiality
Independent interpreters are committed to maintaining confidentiality. Professional
interpreters adhere to strict ethical guidelines, thus preserving the privacy
of sensitive information exchanged in HR meetings. Using an office employee to
translate will not guarantee that gossip will not spread in your business.
Cultural Sensitivity
Workplaces today are often melting pots of cultures and backgrounds.
Misunderstandings due to cultural differences can be avoided with the help of
independent interpreters. Professional linguists are aware of this and often
bring cultural awareness to the table, ensuring that every nuance is respected
and understood. This is something that a regular employee might not even realise.
Legal Compliance
The legality of HR meetings is another aspect where using an independent
linguist is beneficial. Using a qualified and professionally affiliated specialist
bolsters the legal integrity of the proceedings. In cases where legal documents
need to be translated, their expertise is unmatched.
The Cost-Benefit Analysis
The potential benefits often outweigh the cost of hiring independent
interpreters. Miscommunication or misunderstandings in HR meetings can lead to
costly repercussions. Choosing professional interpreters is an investment in
effective communication and conflict resolution.
Language should never be a barrier to fairness, objectivity, and
confidentiality. As someone with experience in interpreting and translating in
employment related cases, I have seen firsthand the difference our profession
can make.
If you are an HR professional or a business owner, take the step to
incorporate independent interpreters into your HR processes. Don't compromise
on effective communication when the stakes are high. If you have any questions or would like to
discuss your experiences, feel free to comment or email me: agata@thelinguist.co.uk. I’d be happy to ensure the success and
fairness of your HR meetings.
